Plot Overview

  • When the party arrives at the beach, they don't immediately spot their client amongst all of the different races and people enjoying the perfect weather and water. A Half-elf with Wood Elf like features sits up from sunbathing and excitingly skips over to the party to introduce herself as the client, Hulakana.
  • Hulakana details her tragic story with surprising positivity: An evil Black Dragon was passing by the area with the command to claim an artifact for the demon lord Graz'zt. During her trip she killed Hulakana's husband and children while she was away, then the bronze dragon killed her for payback. However, she's not satisfied. She wants Graz'zt himself to die and the party to help with that.
  • After leading the party to a more unoccupied side of the beach, she reveals a scroll of gate from underneath her sun hat and shifts to her true form to that of an Ancient Bronze Dragon. After giving the party time to ready themselves from the perilous battle she spreads her wings wide, swears a vow to avenge the ones she has lost, and casts the spell creating a 20-foot diameter portal in front of the double doors of Graz'zt's sky-scraping Argent Palace.
  • Hulakana uses her body to break open the door leading to an empty foyer and a staircase leading up to the throne where The Dark Prince sits bored flanked by Succubus and Incubus attendants along with two more Lamias. Hulakana proclaims her fury which rises the demon lord out of his boredom and into a twisted form of entertainment as he laughs out, "Great! Another dragon pet for me to toy with!" before attacking
  • The throne room his very spacious and open with 200x50 ft. of rectangular space. Tapestries decorate the walls of Graz'zt's conquest of the Abyss. There are two 30 ft. long pews in the middle of the court with 15 ft. of space between the ends, they can provide half cover or full cover to medium creatures that go prone behind them.
  • Once Graz'zt is killed permanently the party is free to leave the Abyss through the portal and back onto the beach where nobody knows what they've done just yet. All that matters is that the dragon has deliberated proper justice for her family. Skipping formalities, she bestows each character (dead or alive) the feat Gift of the Metallic Dragon and take them back to her lair so they can collect 2,000 gold pieces each along with any material component they need to revive fallen comrades.

Graz'zt Fight Stages

Swordplay (346 - 200 hp). Graz'zt wants to test the strength of his future thralls, so he predominantly uses Wave of Sorrow, his Attack legendary action, and casts darkness to make the party easier to hit. He saves his Negate Spell reaction for attacks of opportunity but will take his Teleport action to avoid their strikes.

Abyssal Magic (200 - 100 hp). Now more worried about getting close to the party Graz'zt keeps his distance and hides behind his giant throne and sling spells at his assailants. Specifically, he favors telekinesis, dispel magic, dominate person, and darkness so the characters can't see him move away. He tactically uses Negate Spell as much as necessary.

Ultimate Subjugation (100 - 0 hp. or when Hulakana uses her final legendary resistance). He's desperate now, leaning on his throne and sword just to stay on his own two feet and in a fit of rage and fear he uses his dominate monster spell on the ancient dragon and get her to try and kill the adventurers. If that fails, he begins using dominate person and charm person on every party member as often as he can (knowing they'll be more resistant to it). Then he'll use his Dance My Puppet and Command actions to get every party member as far away from him as possible.

Temporary Death (0 hp). His gold amulet with an emerald inside glows and Graz'zt looks down at it in despair as he gets sucked into it. Any character can make a DC 25 Intelligence (Arcana or Religion) check to determine that his essence has been sucked into the amulet in order for him to reappear with less power in the Abyss later. Hulakana has already researched this and snatches up the gem then proceeds to use her entire Lightning Breath on it, reducing it to ash, and killing Graz'zt permanently!

How to Run the NPCs

Hulakana. After finding out that demons resist her natural weapons, she focuses on using her two breath weapons on them so they can't help their master. She will also grapple or shove the lesser monsters so the adventurers have the advantage. The gate scroll she used was specially made by her and will last 10 minutes without her concentrating on it.

Lamia. The male and female lamia will focus on distracting the melee fighters of the party and weaken their minds with intoxicating touches. If one gets lucky and survives until the Ultimate Subjugation phase it'll use intoxicating touch of Hulakana to bend her to their demon prince's whim.

Succubus/Incubus. Similar to the lamia the male and female demons will attempt to charm or attack backline archers or casters. They'll first slip into the Ethereal Plane and fly their way to the back presumably safe from attack.
